Fibber Island

The first mass media April Fools joke came from The Guardian in 1977 and was all about the San Serriffe republic in the Indian Ocean. Brought to my attention by 30gms.

CARtoons

The previous post got me thinking about the comics I read as a kid and the car comic CARtoons came to mind. Besure to click on the issues to see all of the covers. This was the first issue I bought.

The Fold In

Design Observer had a link to a great article about Al Jaffee, the artist behind the famous Mad Magazine fold in. The best part is the slideshow. The flash action to fold the page in is great.

Cliff Claven's Source?

Mental Floss has a great Random Fact Generator. For instance, did you know that 1981 saw the first Miss America contestant disqualified for "illegal use of padding" on the swimsuit competition? Me either.

Dexter Sinister

I was looking at the site for the 2008 Whitney Biennial and noticed among the artists Dexter Sinister. I am not sure how often designers are included in the group, but I am guessing that it is rarely. Their piece is quite interesting and plays with the way reviews of the show are handled by the media. Titled True Mirror, their daily press releases ended on the 23rd of March and can be found on the website for the project.
This is really interesting stuff.

Taking Things Seriously

I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this book. I have really been enjoying the excerpts that have been posted on Design Observer for the last few months. Read them all: Introduction, I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX. This will be one of the first books I buy when I return to the US.

Obsessive Consumption

The daily illustrations of Kate Bingaman-Burt have alwas interested me. But a further exploration of her website reveals many more things to find interesting, such as this, this and this. Maybe we can get her to Michigan next year.
